At the time, this seemed like an extreme approach, especially because there was only one computer in my life. In a previous post, I discussed the possible benefits of writing some, if not all, early drafts by hand. Today, I enter the world of alternative word processing programs. Because I’m not a computer geek (or, rather, I’m just ignorant when it comes to computers), I wasn’t really aware that anyone used anything other than Microsoft Word when they’re writing on the computer. I’ve since learned that people use a variety of word processors. And, as it turns out, I’ve found a new, strange one that I actually like. I heard about OmmWriter from a friend of mine who is a poet, scholar, and artist. It’s a “minimalist,” full-screen word-processing program, one that lacks the clutter of the tool bars, rulers, and menus that most of us see in Microsoft Word. This full-screen program prevents users from using other programs-like an internet browser-at the same time they’re using Ommwriter. When I heard about OmmWriter’s special features-document background colors, as well soundtracks and sound effects-I was a little suspicious. Honestly, I thought the program sounded cheesy. This is both due to its lack of formatting options and because large amounts of text will clutter up the page. But, when I discovered the free version of the program, and then the newer version–which you pay for on a donation basis–I decided to try it out. Non-ideal for saving longer pieces of writing, like a novel. It is fairly easy to exit full-screen mode to look up something on the Internet, which will pull you out of the experience. The newest version, GAIA, is, as of this writing, not available for Windows. Some fully-featured writing programs, such as Scrivener, also provide a distraction-free option. It does not allow for paragraph indention or text formatting. It does not have spelling & grammar check. This allows you to focus solely on your meditative writing experience.Ĭons: It is not free. There are no distracting red and green squiggly lines that appear when you make a mistake. It has gift options as well as an option for purchasing a group license. It is available for Windows, Mac and iPad. You can choose whether to play sounds or not. Has more customization features than other distraction-free writing programs. Pros: Allows for simple, distraction-free writing with a full-screen mode. All writers occasionally need to zone in and just write. While it cannot replace a fully-functional word processor, OmmWriter is a solid choice for a distraction-free writing program. GAIA, the Mac version, has a minimum purchase price of $6.20. The minimum amount is $4.60 for the DANA version for Windows. It is not a subscription-based service, and you pay what you want for the program. OmmWriter itself does not allow printing. You may also export it in an e-mail or as a. However, the newest version allows you to save your writing in. OmmWriter used to only have limited export options for your text. You can change the size of the text box, the volume of the sounds and the brightness of the screen to fit your fancy as well. OmmWriter lets you write the way you want to. For some people, the sounds may be very helpful, but for others they are annoying. Of course, you can also turn those options off if you wish to keep the experience as basic as possible. You can select different ambient music, keystroke sounds, fonts and backgrounds to create your own private writing room. OmmWriter has more customization options than other distraction-free writing programs. Overall Opinion: OmmWriter is a very helpful minimalist writing tool for people who want to get writing done while resisting the temptation of distraction.
